Kindergarten students learned about Pablo Picasso and his role in developing the medium of collage by looking at images and discussing qualities such as, what they looked like they were made of, what the subject matter was, and how shape and line was used to create each artwork.
One such artwork was this one, from the Tate Modern. (Artwork information: Pablo Picasso 1881–1973. Title: Bottle of Vieux Marc, Glass, Guitar and Newspaper Guitare, journal, verre et bouteille. Date: 1913. Medium: Printed papers and ink on paper. Dimensions: Support: 467 x 625 mm. Collection: Tate. Acquisition: Purchased 1961. Reference T00414)
Students then created their own collages made from newspaper pieces glued to a paper. Students then created a mixed media collage by drawing with oil pastel. The focus of these drawings was on abstract themes of lines and shapes, by drawing on and around the newspaper collage pieces. See below for some samples of class work.
