1st grade students created ceramic animals. Their learning targets were to create an animal from clay while using basic ceramic hand building techniques – pinching, rolling coils, patting slabs, score & slip, and then using various tools to add texture, creating the surface of the animal. Students could choose any animal of their choice, first working on some sketches. The planning stage was the hardest part for many students – taking a 2D plan and transforming it to a 3D creature is not an easy feat. Planning ahead and thinking about the animal from multiple angles is an important step for students’ creative process. Plenty of visual resources such as books, magazines, and websites on animals are available for students to use, giving them the opportunity to think of details and textures on their animals before they even start with clay. Once the animals were fired, the students glazed them in their choice of colors.
